Yamaha AE Guitars

These hollow and semi hollow guitars first appeared as the AE 11 in 1967 and through various models remained in production until the mid 90s. All are made in Japan except where stated in the individual descriptions. In theory I suppose the IN10 belongs here but it's described in my rare and unusual Yamaha section.

Some details of the AE 11

Update January 2020 Sean TheSupposedStringMeister has added some more info via the Yamaha Musicians Forum the best way would seem to be just to copy over our conversation so here it is

Hiya Bill, I now have a blonde AE-11 and can report the following Nut width is 43 mm, not 41 as per your website. The early models had black plastic pickup covers with 'silver' mounting rings. The later models came with chrome plated plastic covers with black rings. Their serial numbers are part of the ¬32000 or so units manufactured of the following models: All SA models from 5 to 90, all AE from 11 to 1800 and perhaps even some SG models.I just found this AE-11 in red.... which is not a standard colour. Looks blimmin nice and completely original IMO. What do you think?

From me Had a bit of a look around and found
1967 model with Black pups chrome surround
1968 English catalogue shows Black pups chrome surround
Another 1967 model with Black pups chrome surround
1973 English catalogue shows chrome pickups with black surround
So it looks like the difference is between earlier and later models however there is guitar on guitars japan.com which they say is 1967 but has the later pups, the serial number is 26281 how would that figure with your records?, perhaps they have the date wrong I have seen the red one you mention but only that one all references say Sunburst or natural but if you look at guitarsjapan.com there are 2 AE11s in sunburst one is a definite brown/tobacco sunburst and the other is a very reddish sunburst. Yes the nut is 43mms don't know what I was doing there.

Here's the Red AE11 mentioned by Sean

The two different bursts.

AE 1200S and ii

The 1200 S is in the 1988 catalogue but probably replaced the 1200 around 1985 there are some differences: The neck is Mahogany not Maple
The pickups are now Alnico V humbucker
The control knobs are gold coloured
Extra colours are added as well as Antique stain there are Natural and Burgundy options
I am told that the Sii replaced the S in 1989 but I have no evidence for this and cannot find any details of the differences between the two models

The S or Sii I don't know yet

AE 1200S iii

The Siii came into being in 1992 and is distinguished from the previous models by a different tailpiece, referred to sometimes as a curly X but is like two back to back crescent moons. There don't appear to be any other significant differences.

The Siii note the tailpiece
